6650 Appendix T2

Emergency Procedures for Unbound Engineered Nanoparticles

1.0            Purpose

This appendix outlines the procedures for responding to an exposure to spill of unbound engineered nanoparticles (NP).

2.0            Scope

This appendix applies only to emergencies related to engineered NPs. Emergency response for other materials and situations are discussed in ES&H Manual Chapter 3510 Emergency Response Activities. The process steps for this procedure are performed in coordination with ES&H Manual Chapter 6650 Unbound Engineered Nanoparticle Program.

3.0            Responsibilities

NOTE:           Management authority may be delegated at the discretion of the responsible manager.

3.1              Engineered NP Worker

·         Respond to personnel exposures and spills per this appendix

3.2              Hazardous Waste Coordinator

·         Perform duties and responsibilities in accordance with ES&H Manual Chapter 8061 Hazardous Waste Management

4.0            Process Steps

4.1              Personnel Exposure

Individuals involved in any incident that results in an unexpected exposure (e.g. spill of engineered NP on pants) must:

Step 1:             Remove the contaminated item

Step 2:             Place the item in a sealed container

Step 3:             Rinse the affected body area with water for five (5) minutes

Step 4:             Report immediately to Jefferson Lab Occupational Medicine Clinic

4.2       Spill Response

In case of a spill of engineered NP:

Step 1:             Warn others

Step 2:             Determine the area expected to have been affected by the spill and cover with a wet towel or rag

Step 3:             Restrict entry into the area

Step 4:             Contact the Hazardous Waste Coordinator at x7882 or x6254; for removal of spilled contents and clean-up materials per ES&H Manual Chapter 8061 Hazardous Waste Management
