Appendix T2 Emergency
Procedures for Engineered
Nanoparticles |

This appendix outlines the procedures for responding to an exposure to spill of engineered nanoparticles (NP).
This appendix applies only to emergencies related to engineered NPs. Emergency response for other materials and situations are discussed in ES&H Manual Chapter 3510 Emergency Response Activities.
NOTE: Management authority may be delegated at the discretion of the responsible manager.
· Respond to personnel exposures and spills per this appendix
3.2
Hazardous Waste Coordinator
· Perform duties and responsibilities in accordance with ES&H Manual Chapter 8061 Hazardous Waste Management.
Individuals involved in any incident that results in an unexpected exposure (e.g. spill of engineered NP on pants) must:
Step 1: Remove the contaminated item;
Step 2: Place the item in a sealed container;
Step 3: Rinse the affected body area with water for five (5) minutes; and
Step 4: Report immediately to Jefferson Lab Occupational Medicine Clinic.
4.2 Spill Response
In case of a spill of engineered NP:
Step 1: Warn others;
Step 2: Determine the area expected to have been affected by the spill and cover with a wet towel or rag;
Step 3: Restrict entry into the area;
Step 4: Contact the Hazardous Waste Coordinator at x7882 or x6254; for removal of spilled contents and clean-up materials per ES&H Manual Chapter 8061 Hazardous Waste Management.
