1.0
Purpose
This appendix outlines the procedures for responding to an exposure to spill of engineered nanoparticles (NP).
2.0
Scope
This appendix applies only to emergencies related to engineered NPs. Emergency response for other materials and situations are discussed in ES&H Manual Chapter 3510 Emergency Management Plan.
3.0
Responsibilities
3.1
NP Worker
· Respond to personnel exposures and spills per this appendix
3.2
ESH&Q
Chemical Assistance Team
· Refer to ES&H Manual Chapter 3520 Chemical Assistance Team.
4.0
Process Steps
4.1
Personnel
Exposure:
Employees involved in any incident that results in an unexpected exposure (e.g. spill of NP on pants) must:
· Remove the contaminated item;
· Place the item in a sealed container;
· Rinse the affected area with water for five (5) minutes; and
· Report immediately to Jefferson Lab Occupational Medicine Clinic.
4.2 Spill Response:
In case of a spill of engineered NP:
· Warn others;
· Determine the area expected to have been affected by the spill and cover with a wet towel or rag;
· Restrict entry into the area;
· Contact the ESH&Q Chemical Assistance Team at x7882 or x6254;
· All materials used to cover or clean-up the spill is treated as hazardous waste. Contact the ESH&Q Hazardous Waste Coordinator for removal per ES&H Manual Chapter 6761 Hazardous Waste Management.
