The ESnet host network currently supports the connection of more than 30 DOE facilities to each other and the global internet. The delicate, classified nature of some of the projects and programs being carried out at these facilities has presented a need for secure data transfer over a private network. This need has led ESnet to work on developing what are known as "virtual private networks," independent networks enabled to run transparently over existing host networks. Virtual networks allow each of the independent networks running on a single infrastructure, in this case ESnet, to maintain their own set of needs and technical requirements. A good example of a virtual private network is SecureNet, a classified DOE support network.
ESnet's experience in handling the security and data transferring requirements of a network as impressive
as SecureNet has given them the refinement of expertise needed to support other independent networks
performing high-risk network research. For now, SecureNet and the ESnet host network are enabling researchers
to access and share information and resources in an efficient, secure, cost-effective environment. This
capability allows sharing of expensive network resources in new, dynamic, and more productive ways.
