Computer performance and connectivity

The Scientific Computing facilities at Jefferson Lab consist of a 350 Intel processor Linux cluster integrated with a StorageTek mass storage system (MSS) with a capacity of over 2PB. Three quad-Xeon machines are also available for interactive use. Additionally 2 SUN dual-Sparc Solaris systems provide a second compute platform. Online storage includes 30TB available for caching data from the silo, and an additional 30TB of work space for data not already in the MSS. The system utilizes a gigabit Ethernet network, with an upgrade to 10 gigabit Ethernet anticipated this spring for both local and wide area connectivity. The MSS uses JASMine, software developed at JLab to integrate mass storage with the compute facility; it consists of 2 Powderhorn silos equipped with 20 9940B high performance tape drives. The batch processing farm runs locally-developed Auger software based on Platform Computing's Load Sharing Facility; nodes are configured with 1GB RAM and local disk. Standard C, C++, Fortran 90, and Java development environments are available. The system is supported by generator and uninterruptable power systems.
