203.04 Probationary Period

  1. POLICY

All new regular, term, and casual employees (full and part-time) shall serve a probationary period during which their work performance and general suitability for JSA employment shall be carefully evaluated. This period also will provide an opportunity for new employees to assess their own interest in further employment with JSA.

  2. DURATION

For all employees the probationary period is twelve (12) months..

  3. PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL
    1. All new employees in a probationary status receive a probationary performance assessment at six (6) months from their start date.
    2. A standard annual appraisal is required for probationary employees if, on the last day of the annual reporting period (September 30th), the individual has been employed at least four (4) months.  If an annual appraisal is warranted, the 6-month probationary appraisal is not necessary.

  4. SALARY INCREASE

Probationary employees who receive a performance evaluation are eligible for an annual salary increase in accordance with prevailing compensation policy and procedure.

  5. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS
    1. If at any time during the probationary period the employee's performance or general suitability for JSA employment is found to be unacceptable, the supervisor shall document same and inform the employee of the performance concerns.
    2. If, after an opportunity to correct deficiencies has been given (when appropriate) and the employee's performance continues to be unacceptable, the supervisor shall recommend corrective actions according to JSA’s corrective actions process.
    3. The supervisor shall seek consultation with Human Resources in such cases (See Policy 208.02, Corrective Actions).
