207.10 Bereavement Leave

  1. POLICY

    JSA recognizes that employees may require time away from work upon the death of an immediate family member.� Paid bereavement leave is a benefit provided for regular and term employees, who are scheduled to work 20 hours per week or more. This policy addresses the circumstances that qualify an employee for bereavement leave and the employee's rights and obligations.

  2. GENERAL TERMS
    • Up to three days of leave with pay will be granted for each death in the employee's immediate family.
    • The supervisor may require the employee to present proof of the death. If the supervisor has questions about what constitutes proof, contact a�Human Resources Representative.
    • If the employee needs to take additional leave, she/he may take Vacation leave or leave without pay if their Vacation leave is exhausted.
    • Bereavement leave is granted on an as-needed basis.� Employees do not accrue (earn) bereavement leave.� Any bereavement leave that is used is not deducted from any leave balances.
  3. DEFINITIONS

    Immediate Family:� The immediate family of an employee for use of Bereavement Leave is as follows:

    1. Spouse: A husband or wife as defined or recognized under Virginia law for purpose of marriage.
    2. Son or daughter: Biological, adopted, or foster child, stepchild, legal ward, or child of a person standing "in loco parentis".
    3. Parent: A biological parent or a person who stands "in loco parentis".
    4. Mother-in-law, father-in-law, sibling, and grandparent are included in this definition of immediate family.
    5. Other related individuals who reside in the same household with the employee.
  4. RESPONSIBILITY
    • Employee: Notify supervisor in a timely manner to use bereavement leave and provide proof of death if requested.
    • Supervisor: Ensure that all eligible hours (up to 3 days) are recorded on the employee's timesheet as Bereavement Leave.
