Social Program
Sunday: A buffet dinner will be available at Dalton Ellis Hall from 6:30
to 8:30 pm. There will be a charge of 7 pounds for accompanying persons.
Tuesday: A University reception is planned including a concert by
musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music. This will be free to
accompanying persons.
Wednesday: There is a choice of excursions on Wednesday afternoon. One
group will visit Styal Mill, a 19th century cotton mill featuring working,
water-powered machinery, demonstrations of all aspects of cotton processing
and cloth making, and exhibitions on the history of the mill and the lives
of those who worked there. The mill is set in an attractive park, but the
visit is suitable for those who do not wish to walk far or risk inclement
weather. Afternoon tea will be provided.
Another group will visit Tatton Park. This is an estate of some five
square miles of beautiful countryside, enclosing a lake and a deer park as
well as the specific attractions of the Georgian and medieval halls,
extensive gardens and the estate farm. This visit is suitable for those
who wish a more active afternoon and accept the possibility of rain.
Afternoon tea will be provided.
Accompanying persons may book for either tour at a cost of \pounds9.
For those who wish a less organized afternoon, there is the option of a
voucher which gives entry to the Museum of Science and Industry in central
Manchester. This complex of museums, which includes the world's first
passenger railway station, has a large collection of working steam engines but
also extensive exhibitions on aerospace, other forms of power, transport and
even Victorian sewers! The voucher may be used any time from the 8th to
the 16th. Extra vouchers may be purchased during the Conference.
Thursday: The Conference dinner will be held on Thursday in the Whitworth
Hall, one of the fine Victorian gothic buildings of the University. The
cost for accompanying persons is 25 pounds.
