The Jefferson Lab Recreational Events Update

July 1996

A FEW WORDS FROM THE RECREATION COMMITTEE The Recreation Committee has been on the move, and make no mistake, we wouldn't have it any other way! We take our roles very seriously, so that you can relax and enjoy the activities. We've had a sensational year with new activities such as the Make Your Own Burrito Party, the holiday party aboard the Spirit of Norfolk, and the Bratwurst & Barley Bash. We brought back the favorites: the Run-A-Round, the Monster Bash, and the golf tournaments. And we've supported some intramural teams such as co-ed softball, a bowling league, and now, a basketball team.

We are here to serve you, and we hope we can keep the staff better informed with the addition of Play By Play, a newsletter for and about recreation activities at Jefferson Lab. Continue to receive up to the minute updates on upcoming events by checking out our Web page at: http://www.jlab.org/intralab/committees/jag, the Recreation bulletin boards in key locations across the site, the Recreation Hot Line at extension 4002, and the news bulletins by e-mail.

FORE!

A great time was had by all in the 90 degree, May heat during the second annual Jefferson Lab Spring Golf Tournament. The staff at Sleepy Hole Golf Course did a wonderful job making sure the event was a success. The food was good and hot and the drinks were good and cold.

The winning team was made up of Mike Spata, Mike Memory, Bob Nichols, and Stanley Grimes. The team shot a six under the par and received Duck Head Club Trophies, donated by the American Golf Classics. Other awardees include: Ty Tung and Mark Wiseman for closest to the pins, and Yvonne Casalino and Randy Wykle for long drives. More awards and door prizes were won by many.

Thanks to organizers, participants, and donators: Christoph Leemann, Kiln Creek, and the American Classics for donating the awards and prizes.

HOOP DREAMS

The Recreation Committee is proud to announce the recent sponsorship of a Jefferson Lab Summer Basketball League, and the purchase of a portable basketball hoop for on-site recreational activity. Thanks to Mike Memory, Curt Hovater and Tony Lapolla for getting the basketball team going.

Also, thanks to Sue Witherspoon for getting our attention about the long overdue basketball hoop. A portable one will be purchased and set up on the black top beside Trailer City.

DO YOUR PART

Pitch a can and raise money for activities. Thanks to Tom Jeffords, Jefferson Lab is now doing its own recycling, and the money is going back to the employees in the form of recreational activities. Do your part by throwing your aluminum drinking cans into an on-site recycling bin. In just three months Jefferson Lab has recycled a total of 490 pounds of recyclable materials, receiving over 150 dollars. The Recreation Committee would like to thank Lab personnel for increasing recycling efforts in the month of July. On July 3, 248 pounds of recyclable materials were collected from the site. That's more than double the 121 pounds collected in both the months of May and June.

Money saved from the in-house recycling effort include: 50 dollars a month, for janitorial services, and 56 dollars a quarter, for the recycling dumpster.

STRIKE!

The Jefferson Lab Spring Bowling League had a record number of participants this year and hopes to expand that record next year. The season was considered a success by everyone, and was capped off with a pot luck party at Denbigh Lanes. Last years winners Christine Woodworth, Eric Woodworth, and Roosevelt Banks, along with newcomer John Price, came out this season's top winners. Also shining in their categories were: Jason Ceraul for male highest average, highest scratch series, and highest handicap series; Ed Stitts for male highest scratch game; Karin Garner for female highest handicap game and series; and Walter Lacy for male highest handicap game. The league officers would like to thank everyone who made the season a success.
