Earth Day 2006 - how did Jefferson Lab fair?

Jefferson Lab celebrated Earth Day 2006 on April 19th & 20th

Wednesday, April 19th

Clean Jefferson Lab Day
Site cleanup of a good part of the Lab walking trail around the accelerator site, a good part of the woods along Jefferson Avenue, and near the walking path between CEBAF Center and Support Service Center were cleaned up.

The Lab did its part to reduce pollution, but only had limited participation in the site clean up. Participants DID include one Division Manager AND the DOE Site Office Manager. It was a beautiful day to be out and about at the Lab.

Thank you to all that joined in the effort. The door prize, from a random drawing of participants, went to Craig Ferguson, who will get to make a selection from the Jefferson Lab tee shirt collection.

Thursday, April 20th

Master Gardeners
From the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office - Master gardeners were available to answer horticultural questions

Recycling Works
With Newport News Public Works - NN Public Works was available to answer questions on recycling and buying green

Critters of Virginia
Presented by the Virginia Living Museum. This presentation was combined with "Take Our Children to Work Day".

The volunteers from the City of Newport News and from the York County Master Gardeners (and the EH&S Division and Facilities Management representatives) participated in the 'open house' day. They fielded questions on topics dealing with horticultural concerns, P2 (such as water reduction strategies) that Jefferson Lab uses and general things that the City does to promote recycling and encouraging conservation among the citizens. Literature and recycled content pencils were distributed.

Do you have ideas for future Earth Day 2007 activities? Please send your suggestions to Linda at lle@jlab.org.

NOTE of INTEREST: The City is interested in the Lab participating in their 'adopt a spot' program. Please send your ideas for involving the Lab community in Earth Day for 2007.
