Jefferson Lab's EMS Self-Declared!

Jefferson Lab, thanks to its EMS Implementation Team (that includes reps from all parts of the Lab) under the guidance of Mary Erwin (the EMS Management Representative), has been recognized by the DOE Site Office as having an EMS in place. Mr. Turi, Site Office Manager, provided notice to DOE Headquarters on December 16 that Jefferson Lab had met the commitment to have an EMS by December 31, 2005.

Hurray!!!

To get to this point of self-declaration, the DOE (two Site Office staff and one EMS specialist from Oak Ridge Operations) assisted Jefferson Lab in reviewing our EMS implementation status in early December. Through this review it was jointly identified that the EMS was definitely in place, but that some portions needed focused attention to bring it into better conformance with both ISO 14001 (the international EMS standard) and the DOE O 450.1 Contractor Requirements Document (that addressed elements such as NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) that were not specifically covered in the ISO standard).

To address identified issues, Mary Erwin and Craig Ferguson (who is the new EMS Management Representative) worked with involved staff and the DOE reviewers to develop corrective actions. Completion of these actions by the responsible staff will demonstrate the Lab's commitment to EMS. A responsible staff member has been assigned to each corrective action with some already in progress at being resolved.

The EMS Implementation Team is still acting to support the responsible staff involved with the corrective actions until an EMS working group is appointed. Look for more EMS updates throughout 2006 in various Jefferson Lab publications including this web-site; On-Target; and On-Target briefs.
