S&T Review Ends on High Note |
The Department of Energy's annual Science and Technology Review of Jefferson Lab ended July 2 on a high note, with a nod to the past and the future, and a farewell salute from Lab Director Christoph Leemann. "This is the last time that I stand here, and I'm glad that I have received a good report card," said Leemann, who will retire at the end of August. He thanked Chief Scientist Tony Thomas and other staff members for their "thorough and diligent" efforts in making the review a success. And he joked that he won't know what to do next summer without an S&T review. During the three-day review, a panel of Department of Energy officials, scientists and invited reviewers listened to presentations regarding all facets of the lab and its operations, and then rendered a preliminary opinion based on their findings to lab administrators and scientists. The panel gave a glowing review of the lab during the review closeout session. The panel said the research program "continues to be a world leader," and noting that the Theory Group has an "international impact." The accelerator staff was praised as "highly professional," and the lab's student programs were called "commendable." The review panel also praised the lab's "consistent and systematic" cryogenics program, noting its world leadership standing. Panel members also praised the lab for its relations with users, and providing a nurturing climate. "Clearly, you are doing very well, and I want to applaud you," said Jehanne Simon-Gillo, acting associate director of the Office of Science for Nuclear Physics. "We will do everything in our power to help you be successful." |
