CEBAF Thesis Prize Announcement June 14, 2000 In recognition of the vital role played by graduate students in the scientific mission of Jefferson Laboratory, the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) has established a yearly prize for the best graduate student thesis. The award includes a stipend of $1000, and a wall plaque commemorating the achievement. Winners will also be listed on a permanent plaque to be mounted near the Director's office. The prize will be presented at the Users Group Meeting at the Fall DNP meeting in Williamsburg, where the winner will be invited to speak about his or her results. Eligibility All graduate students whose dissertation results from CEBAF research are eligible for the thesis prize. This includes students enrolled at non-SURA institutions, including universities outside the United States. Experimental theses must be primarily devoted to experiments carried out at Jefferson Lab. Theoretical theses must be relevant to experiments at the Laboratory. The 1999 prize will be awarded for theses that have been successfully defended and accepted in final form by the university during the twelve calendar months of 1999. Application and Deadline The thesis advisor must nominate each applicant for the award. The nomination letter should describe the student's contribution to the research described in the thesis and to the laboratory in general. It should also include the date of the dissertation defense, and the date that the thesis was accepted by the university in final form. One additional letter of support is welcome but not required. The student's CV, including a list of publications and conference contributions, and four copies of the dissertation must be included with the application. These materials must be received by the User Liaison Office no later than August 1, 2000 for the 1999 prize. Selection Criteria The recipient of the thesis prize will be selected by a committee chosen by the Jefferson Lab Users Group Board of Directors. If the applicants include a thesis student from a Board member's institution, that Director will not take part in the evaluation. Selection will be based on the quality of the written dissertation and on the contribution of the student to the scientific mission of the lab.
