Subject: Cosmic ray run plan

Folks,

Tomorrow at 9:00 am Dave, Eugene and I will meet in the Counting Room for
the cosmic run. Subsystem representatives should be reachable during the
day in case there are questions or if help is needed. Right now the list
is:

  HyCal: Valeri
  Light Monitoring: Yar
  Pair Spectrometer: Dave (for Liping)
  TAC: Mahbub
  Tagger and Beamline: Eugene
  Trigger and DAQ: Dave
  Slow Controls: Mark

Anyone else who is willing and able is welcome to show up and
learn/kibitz/advise/heckle. Actually, no heckling, please.

We will try to work through the following list of triggers:

1. HyCal sum
2. Pair Spectrometer
3. TAC
4. Light Monitor

and look at monitoring histograms for each. Right now, I am assuming that
the veto counters will not be ready.

In addition, we will look at the following DAQ-related issues:

1. Multiple-file runs [done, see below]
2. Transfer to silo

We will also exercise control of the following beamline
components/procedures: [all of these done, see log for Thu. 8/20]

1. Tagger magnet
2. Pair spectrometer magnet
3. Harp scan
4. Target ladder motion
5. Prototype stand motion

Hopefully some of these tasks can be done in parallel. As we go we will
accumulate a list of issues/tasks/problems that need to be addressed
before beam arrives.

Items identified for further work denoted by the "-->" symbol.

--> CAMAC-based programmable trigger needs to be established.

Right now we will run with a fake version of the HyCal signal.

The real list of triggers is probably

 T1. HyCal-0 (singles)
T2. PSMT (pair spec. 4-fold coinc.)
 T3. TAC
 T4. MOR (full plane)
 T5. MOR_20 (first 20 T counters (high energy photon, 70-95% full e energy))
 T6. MOR_T2 (T-counter 2 only)
 T7. 1 kHz clock
 T8. LMS (light monitoring system)
 T9. calib 1
T10. calib 2

09:30 Aram arrives.

09:45 Dave and Sergei get multiple-file runs to work.

Eugene and his buddy go down into the Hall to look at the health of
the tagger MOR triggers.

Mark goes into the Hall to reinstall the VME board for prototype stand
motion control.

09:50 Scripts for multiple files committed to CVS. The file names are of the
following format : primex_xxxxx.dat.XX where xxxxx is replaced by the
zero-padded run number and XX by the file number for that run starting from
00.

10:15 Prototype stand motion restored. The VME motor control board had
been in the EEL for target ladder motion testing. Discover that
channel 0 is the vertical motion and channel 1 is the horizontal,
contrary to memory of MMI.

10:30 Eugene reports that all MOR trigger signals are connected at the
tagger electronics end.

11:00 Discover that the arcnet cable connecting the HyCal HV mainframe
to the rest of the network was removed in the clean up before the tour
by the Director of Energy Research. As a result, we no longer have
control of the HV for the tagger or for the prototype. We need to wait
until after the tour to restring the cable.

11:45 Data acquisition running on HyCal triggers, test purposes
only. Probably mainly triggering on light monitor events.

12:00 Tour hits the Hall.

12:45 Tour leaves the Hall.

14:30 Arcnet cable has been restored. We now have nominal control of
prototype and tagger HV channels.

14:40 Start to start the DAQ from scratch for some cosmic
running. Begin with a HyCal-0 energy sum.

--> Need written instructions on how to start CODA for PrimEx

14:50 Yar has turned off the pulser for the LMS so that we can take
cosmics with HyCal-0 without flash events mixed in (and perhaps
dominating). Yar has supplied a simple set of instruction for turning
the LMS pulses on and off; there is hardcopy in the counting room.

15:00 New items for today's run plan. These should have been included in the
original email message, but were not. They were suggested at last
Friday's PrimEx meeting.

o check beamline valves: done, see log for Thu. 8/22
o check gate timing
o pair spectrometer plateau procedure run through

--> Need to find out how to check beamline valves.

15:15 DAQ runs from all three tagger triggers. Possible problem with
HyCal-0 and pair spect. trigger (no rate). Dave and Eugene go into the
Hall to investigate.

16:00 E147 tripped. Does not hold HV. Needs to be looked at tomorrow.

--> Check tagger counter E147.

Threshold on HyCal-0 "sum" discriminator lowered from 400 mV to 50
mV. Now get about 1 to 2 Hz of HyCal-0 triggers. Here is a nice event:

hycal-0_track.gif

Needless to say, the real-time event display works very well.

Monitoring histograms are filling nicely for both tagger and HyCal-0
(tagger data is sparse since it is not in the trigger.

--> Need instructions on how to start and run event display.

--> Need instructions on how to create and view monitoring histograms.

17:15 Start a run for overnight. Run 684. Trigger is

 HyCal-0 no prescale
 PSMT (OR mode) prescale=10
 TAC prescale=10
 MOR (full) prescale=200

Total rate is 11 Hz.

17:20 Never did get the target ladder installed. Eric is making good
progress with the control system though. We have commisioned a new VME
motor control board so that we can control both the prototype stand
and the target from the PrimEx IOC (rather than relying on CLAS
IOC's).

We did not make it through the entire run plan but made some good
progress. We will continue the program tomorrow. Shift personnel now
leaving the counting room.
