Day Shift, Saturday, August 24, 2002 8:00 D. Lawrence, J. He, E. Clinton, S. Danagoulian on shift Called MCC to ask status. The Crew Chief informed me that they tried tuning beam to us for 4 hours and were unsuccessful and so gave up. At this point, they are not planning any more attempts at giving us beam. Our only option is to talk with the PDL at the 8:30am meeting. 11:30 Mark talks to Roger Carlini (Program Deputy), Mark Pitt (Hall C Run Coordinator) and Jacques Ludwig (Crew Chief). Hall C just started getting beam, about a couple of hours ago. They are struggling with rate problems right now and are in the middle of devising strategies to diagnose and correct their beam steering. Apparently, beam cannot be established to Hall B without bringing down Hall C for the duration of the beam tuning exercise. Given their current problems, Hall C is not considering giving up the beam for tuning to Hall B right now. According to Jacques, the process of establishing G0 beam to Hall C was not done with simultaneous multiple hall operation in mind. In particular, the beams coming out of the injector for the two halls are not well matched. That means that a good tune for one hall may not be a good tune for another. There are some other steering magnets being used that interfere with higher-than-three pass beam. All of this happened in the context of poor general health of the machine for the past few weeks. For it looks like we need to wait for the situation in Hall C to settle down. Mark I. will contact Mark P. this afternoon to try to identify a window for another attempt at steering us up. Roger seems willing to do this if Hall C does not mind. 16:16 D. Lawrence - Finished writing epics2et and installed in DAQ. Program is automatically started and stopped at beginning and end of run.
