Since 2001, physics professor Liping Gan has directed an undergraduate nuclear research program at the UNCW Physics Department. This program was established to provide effective training opportunities to enhance undergraduate education. Participating students typically spend 2-3 summer months at the National Jefferson Lab (JLab) in Newport News, Virginia. They engage in frontier nuclear and particle physics research, and then return to UNCW to continue their work throughout the academic year at the Physics Department's own Nuclear Research Lab. The research program is funded by the National Science Foundation and by the Research Corporation.
