PAC Proposal

It was argued by the MIT group, voiced by Aron, that

  • publication preprint should precede submitting the proposal,
  • there's is significant π0 analysis delay that could hinder putting the proposal together,
  • since this is the last opportunity to submit 6 GeV proposals the schedule is overfull - our credibility is at stake.

Ashot, on the other hand, fully supports going to this last 6 GeV PAC. His views in this respect haven't changed for past 3 years.
Ashot's response to the above was in regard with the first point,

  • it will be months before we submit a paper for publication,
  • not every collaboration publishes before asking for more beam time,
  • PrimEx has already achieved a success: invited talk at April 2007 APS meeting.

The response to the above in regard with the second point,

  • PrimEx collaboration did outstanding job preparing the experiment, better than most.

Mark's comments on the issue were that,

  • If Larry says this is the last PAC for 6 GeV proposals then we should take him at his word and not try to come back later as an exceptional case.
  • At some level, we should let the PAC decide whether the proposal has merit or not and not try too hard to pre-judge the outcome.
  • The manpower working on the proposal and that working on the analysis for a final result is largely non-overlapping.

Dan's remarked that,

  • writing the proposal is easier now to write than before since it does not require running time consuming simulations.

The overall consensus was that we strongly encourage those working on the proposal to continue their efforts. This encouragement does not, however, constitute a final decision to go forward with submission to the PAC. That decision will follow a review of the text of the proposal.

Collaboration Meeting

No collaboration meeting for now, we should focus on the proposal.

Announcements

  • Sergey got the visa and will be here for two months, beginning sometime in Novemeber.
  • Ilya will come for 6 months, maybe in November, but his coming here is not yet well defined.
