Research Interests

My main focus is the study of the orbital motion of quarks and in particular the observation and interpretation of single-spin asymmetries (SSA) in semi-inclusive and exclusive electroproduction of hadrons and photons with polarized beam or target. Feasibility studies have been performed and number of proposals have been developed for future measurements of SSAs using upgraded JLab and future Electron-Ion Collider. Both projects are currently accepted as highest priorities of nuclear physics in US for the coming decade by Nuclear Science Advisory Committee.

Employment History

01/04/2004-Present Jefferson Lab, Senior Staff Scientist

Responsibilities: coordination of the analysis of single-spin asymmetries in azimuthal distributions of semi-inclusive pion and exclusive photon production in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) using polarized NH3 (eg1, eg1dvcs data sets) and unpolarized hydrogen target (e16, e1f, e1dvcs) experiments. These measurements provide access to the transverse structure of nucleon encoded in Transverse Momentum Distributions (TMDs) and Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) describing transverse momentum and space distributions of partons, respectively. I am the spokesperson and the contact person of the following approved JLab and JLab12 proposals on nucleon spin-structure studies:
E-05-113 (H.Avakian et al, Semi-Inclusive Pion Production with a Longitudinally Polarized Target at 6 GeV),
E12-06-112 (H.Avakian et al , Probing the Proton's Quark Dynamics in Semi-Inclusive Pion Production at 12 GeV),

LOI12-07-101 (H.Avakian et al, Lambda Polarization in the Target Fragmentation Region).

01/12/2001-01/04/2004 Jefferson Lab, Post Doctoral Research Associate

Responsibilities: measurements of single-spin and double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive and exclusive electroproduction of pions and photons (DVCS) with polarized beam or target. I introduced the subject of single-spin asymmetries (SSAs) to the CLAS Collaboration at Jefferson Lab, and was responsible for The beam SSA in pion electroproduction were observed for the first time in DIS kinematics. Results were presented for the first time on Baryons 2002. Kinematic dependencies of exclusive pion and photon (DVCS) beam SSA in DIS kinematics were extracted for the first time. Significant SSA have been measured for different hadronic final states in exclusive limit in hard regime (W^2>5,Q^2>2). It was shown that JLAB can play a leading role in SSA studies already at existing energies and detector setup. A letter of intent was approved by JLab PAC on investigation of single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive and hard exclusive processes using the transversely polarized target.

Offline responsibilities: improvement of CLAS calibration procedure, including production, database management and monitoring of calibration constants and data quality. Main activity was focused on providing a reliable and stable access to CLAS calibration database (CALDB). A set of tools was developed for CALDB on different languages (C,JAVA,PERL) to maintain the SQL database server, and provide reliable and stable performance. A new approach for storing and retrieving of constants was developed to improve the calibration database functionality. Tests of integrity of the CLAS analyzing and calibration software have been developed for new software releases.

10/11/1994-12/11/2000 INFN-Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (via E.Fermi 40, Frascati, I00044, Italy), Senior Research Scientist (primo ricercatore)

Responsibilities: coordination of the HERMES analysis of spin-azimuthal asymmetries and coordination of SSA analysis in INFN Frascati. The Frascati group initiated and was the main contributor in publication of four HERMES papers including Phys. Lett., B444 (1998) 531-538, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84 (2000) 4047-4051, Eur. Phys. Jour.C. C 21 (2001) 599, Physics Review D64 ,097101 (2001) (Numbers 32,38,45,52 in the list of publications)

Major accomplishment was the first observation of single-spin asymmetries (SSA) in hadron electroproduction in deep inelastic scattering. I introduced the subject of single-spin asymmetries to the HERMES analysis and was responsible for coordinating the analysis of single-spin asymmetries in azimuthal distributions of pions produced in the semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS) of positrons on a polarized target. These asymmetries first reported on DIS-99 workshop, provide access to transverse spin dependent parton distributions, "Collins effect" in hadronization and higher twist effects in polarized SIDIS.

Detector responsibilities: design and stable operation of HERMES (lead glass) and CLAS (lead scintillator) calorimeters, including design and implementation of the reconstruction, simulation and calibration software for the calorimeter, MC studies of radiation resistant lead glass counters and optimization of the design.

Investigation of motion and channeling radiation of high energy particle in diamond crystal. It was shown that channeling radiation (discovered in 1979 at SLAC) can be used as a source of high energy, monochromatic, forward directed, polarized gamma-radiation. For that work (my PhD thesis in 1986) I was awarded as a best young scientist in YerPI in 1986.

My other activities included deuteron photo-disintegration, motion and radiation of high energy particles in the oriented crystals, stochastic and nonlinear phenomena in high energy physics.
