Exploring Velocity and Acceleration
This Lesson corresponds to pp. 41-58 in Coletta College Physics. Please READ these pages before going on.
After doing the reading, please answer the following:
- An object is dropped from a tall tower. Its speed is recorded as a function of time in the table below:

- Draw a graph of speed vs. time (with time on the horizontal axis) from the data above. Label your axes.
- Use the equation a = ( vf - vi) / t to find the the average acceleration of the ball from 0 to 2.5 sec.
- Find the slope of the line in your graph. Should you say, "Aha?"
- Find the average speed of the object as it falls from 0 to 2.5 sec.
- Use the average speed you just got to determine how far the object has fallen from 0 to 2.5 sec.
- Look at your graph. Drop a vertical line from the point above 2.5 sec to the axis, forming a triangle. According
to the scales on the axes of the graph, what are the height and base of the triangle? What is the area of the triangle? "Aha?"
- Based on your evidence, what is the acceleration of a falling object due to gravity?
- The graph below shows the speed of an object as it changes over time. Please study it and answer the questions which follow.
- What is the speed at t=0? t=0.5 sec? t=1.0 sec? t=2.0 sec? t=3.0 sec?
- What does a horizontal line in a speed-time graph indicate?
- What does a line with a positive slope in a speed-time graph indicate?
- What would a line with a negative slope in a speed-time graph indicate?
- Find the acceleration from 0 to 1 sec.
- Find the acceleration from 1 to 4 sec.
- Find the distance the object travels from 0 to 1 sec.
- Find the distance the object travels from 1 to 4 sec.
- Find the distance travelled from 0 to 4 sec.
- Find the average speed from 0 to 4 sec.
