The importance of finding ways to import the knowledge and techniques gained from QuarkNet into the classroom has been discussed from the beginning of the program. Many teachers have indicated some plans to bring particle physics to their students. One of the teachers, Peter Bruecken, even brought his high school physics class to a CMS videoconference.
The staff members will visit the QuarkNet Centers during the 1999-2000 academic year for classroom visits, discussion of classroom transfer, and planning for the three-week Associate Teacher Institutes. The Lead Teachers and Mentors have been apprehensive about ATI planning; QuarkNet staff are giving them assistance.
Ultimately, as CDF and D0 come back online, and again as ATLAS and CMS begin to take data, follow-on will be completed by the generation and dissemination of real-time experimental particle physics data on the internet. As a result of QuarkNet, there ought to be a large cadre (~700) of teachers who have proper knowledge and experience to help students use that data to enhance their understanding of physics.
