QuarkNet Gets Going

The QuarkNet proposal, made by Principal Investigators Marge Bardeen of FNAL (Project Spokesperson), Randal Ruchti of Notre Dame, Michael Barnett of LBNL, and Keith Baker of Hampton University, was approved for funding by NSF and DOE to begin in the 1999 Fiscal Year. QuarkNet began its operations from the FNAL Education Office under Project Director Tom Jordan of FNAL.

In the autumn of 1998 the original QuarkNet website (http://quarknet.fnal.gov/) was established, including pages for teachers and for high energy physics institutions to express interest in the program. As expressions of interest came in, the original members of the QuarkNet Staff (Tom Jordan, Andria Erzberger from LBNL, and Patrick Mooney from Notre Dame) visited prospective QuarkNet centers to acquaint them with the program. This process continued through January 1999.

In January 1999, the fourth member of the QuarkNet staff, Ken Cecire of Hampton University, came onboard and spent February catching up with what had already been accomplished. Around the same time, Ken McFarlane of Hampton University began to assist Keith Baker with his duties as PI.

The team met on February 19 at FNAL to select the QuarkNet Centers. Each of the thirteen new QuarkNet Centers chosen recruited two Lead Teachers (save one, which had only one Lead Teacher). These Lead Teacher appointments were completed by the end of May.

*Langston and OU will unite in 2000 to form a single QuarkNet Center.

Each Center is a high energy physics research institution which recruits two Lead Teachers and mentors them in research in the first year of their involvement with QuarkNet. In the second year, the mentors and the Lead Teachers design and run a three-week workshop for up to ten Associate Teachers, whom they also recruit. The QuarkNet staff assists with all of these activities.

On April 13, a Mentor Orientation was held at FNAL. The agenda included nuts and bolts of how QuarkNet works, ways of working with high school teachers, and inquiry learning. There was also time for staff members and mentors to get to know each other.
