History
The Medical Physics Section of the National Society of
Black Physicists (NSBP) was created in January 2004 with the joint
efforts of Dr. Paul Guèye (Physics Department, Hampton University),
Dr. Steven Avery (Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Pennsylvania)
and Dr. Christopher Njeh (US Oncology). On December 2004, it
has been re-named as the Medical Physics Section of NSBP or MPS. On October 2005, the MPS acronym was changed to
MED for consistency with the other new sections being created at NSBP.
Goals
The Medical Physics Section of the National Society of Black Physicists was created to provide new opportunities
for under-represented scientists, in particular the African American community
in the field of medical physics. The high national needs of medical physicists (exceeding
300/year) is a motivation by itself in organizing such session for attracting
more minorities in this field.
The primary goals of MED are: (1) to foster the role of minority scientists
in providing expertise in the field of medical physics; (2) establish a collaboration
of minority scientists that will coherently emphasize the impact of medicine in targeted
ethnic groups (namely minorities); (3) offer opportunity to students in pursuing higher
degree education in the field of medical physics.
