Prototype tests using cosmic rays and sources
The prototypes have been tested for their response to cosmic rays and
x-ray photons. Minimum ionizing particles produce clear tracks in the
2cm drift region. The gain of the detectors was measured using a 10
microcurie Iron 55 radioactive source. Both prototypes posess an
initial turn-on time of approximately 10 min. This has been noted by
other GEM researchers and is thought to be explained by the GEM's hole
geometry. The gain is also seen to be rate dependent, increasing signal
rates decrease the overall gain. Possible explanations are still being
investigated.
