March and April 2001 H(e,e'K) Runplan

3.395 GeV Preliminaries

Before Starting:       Before beginning check the beam conditions. The OTR should be in (if possible). Fast feedback should also be on, both energy and orbit locks and locked to Hall A. The 15 cm LH2 target should be in, and the MCC should be told to setup for 75 uA (but that we want to start at 25 uA first).

Beam Energy:       Request a beam energy measurement ASAP. Ask Doug Higinbotham or Joe Mitchell. The energy should be 3.395  GeV. If different by more than 5 MeV (as measured by the Hall A arc-integral B*dl or the Hall A ep), get an updated table of kinematics from P. Markowitz. If there is any difficulty either with the energy or the locks, contact A. Saha.

Trigger and DAQ:     Page or phone Bob Michaels. Ask him to: i) modify how we write data to the storage silo, ii) change the timing of the kaon coincidence trigger.

Spectrometer Angles:     Page or phone the Hall A technician on call to come in and change the angle. Phone MCC and request an access. Be sure to notify the technician of the angle change (it may take two technicians to do this angle change). Set the magnets second. Pay attention as the dipole ramps up. The right-arm (e.g., electron for us) has been mis-behaving but at higher momenta. Call John LeRose or Javier Gomez if there is any difficulty. HALOG the magnet screen when settings are complete.<

Beam position:     Less than 0.100 mm for x and y for 3A and 3B

Raster size:           2.0x2.0mm in SPOT or smaller.

Beam Current:      Start at 25 microA on the 15 cm LH2. Expect singles rates of 40 Khz at 25 microA.

Target:                  15cm LH2

3.395 GeV First setting

Kinematics 17:          We will start at the Q2=1.90 (GeV/c)2, W=1.94 GeV, low epsilon setting.

Left  +1.986 GeV/c +12.50° 6msr

Data taking

  •       If the angle change is not yet underway as described above, change to 12.5 degrees for the left (kaon) arm. Change the magnets. HALOG the magnet screen when settings are complete.

  •       Change the electron angle simultaneously. When the technicians come out of the hall, HALOG the angles and the vernier settings.

  •        The trigger setup needs to be set for a electron in the right arm and a kaon (of momentum PK=1.986) in the left arm. Coincidence gate width should be 80 ns.

  •       The prescales for T1,T2,T3 and T4 should be set to give less than 10 Hz trigger rate for each. T5 should be set to 1. The T8 prescale should be set to maximum. HALOG the prescale values.

  •        Need to check the header file: hdr_kaon17

  •        The data taking time is estimated to be 40 hours. Replay person (3rd) will need to update the time by doing a simultaneous replay and keeping a running sum on the white board of the number of kaons and the total triggers. Also check detector spectra with the detector kumac.

  •        Take a short (15 minute) run at 25 uA then increase current to 75 uA and take the rest of the data.

  •        Take a short (30 minute) run at 25 uA or the maximum current on the 15 cm empty target.

  •        Put in the optics 9-foil target and take a 15 minute mainly singles run. Remember to change the prescales to 1 for T1 and T3. Keep T2 and T4 at less than 50 Hz. Use a beam current as high as possible keeping deadtime less than 20%.

  • 3.395 GeV Second setting

Kinematics 18:          The second setting is the Q2=2.35 (GeV/c)2, W=1.85 GeV, low epsilon setting.

    Data taking

  •       Leave the kaon angle as it is. Set the momenta to the new settings (-.7880 GeV/c and +1.893 GeV/c). Both of these represent decreases in the momenta and the magnets do NOT need to be cycled. Call John LeRose or Javier Gomez if there is any difficulty. HALOG the magnet screen.

  •       While the magnets are ramping, perform a harp scan and a beam current calibration. HALOG the results.

  •       Change the electron angle simultaneously. When the angles have been reached, type the results into the main GUI and HALOG the angles and the vernier settings.

  •        The trigger setup should not need changed.

  •       The prescales for T1,T2,T3 and T4 should be set to give less than 10 Hz trigger rate for each. T5 should be set to 1. The T8 prescale should be set to maximum. HALOG the prescale values. The values from the previous kinematics should be good.

  • 4.232 GeV Ninth and Tenth settings

Kinematics 29 and 30:         The twenty-ninth and thirtieth settings are the LT-interfence part. Call in the Hall A "tech on call" halfway through the twenty-ninth measurement to prepare for the small angle. Here the electron will stay fixed and the hadron momentum will be constant between 29th and 30th settings.

Settings:     Change the electron arm first then take a 5 minute single arm run with the multifoil targets. Then change the hadron arm and take another 5 minute single arm run with the multifoil target.

Beam and Target:      Double check that fast feedback locks on both energy and orbit are on. Spot should give a raster of 2.0x2.0mm or smaller. Change to the LH2 target. Again start at 25 microA on the 15 cm LH2.

    Data taking
  •       Change the prescales back to what they were (as a starting point). Be sure the trigger is properly loaded (it should be the same).

  •       HALOG the settings (magnets, angles, prescales).

  •       The prescales for T1,T2,T3 and T4 should be set to give less than 10 Hz trigger rate for each. T5 should be set to 1. The T8 prescale should be set to maximum. HALOG the prescale values.

  •        Need to modify the header file : hdr_kaon29, hdr_kaon30 appropriately.

  •        The data taking time is estimated to be 4.0 hours each for settings. Will need to update by doing a simultaneous replay.

  •        Take a short (15 minute) run at 25 uA then increase current to 75 uA and take the rest of the data.

  •        Take a short (15 minute) run at 25 uA on the 15 cm empty target for each setting.

  •        Change to angle 30, take the hydrogen data (again 4 hours) then switch to the multifoil target and take 5 minutes at 10 uA.
