The following pictures were taken 9/14/00, 1 day after the target exploded (Sep. 13, 2000) before anyone had disturbed the contents of the scattering chamber. Deuterium was running in loop1, Hydrogen in loop2, and loop3 was empty. The beam was on the 15cm D2 cell at the time (13uA). The target was behaving stable and normal up to at least 10 minutes before it blew.
The 15cm D2 cell & entrance window are completely gone, only part of the flow diverter remains.
The welded plate on the D2 cell block also blew off.
The front entrance tubes (& windows) on the H2 loop appear to be intact but the H2 "beer cans" were destroyed.
Loop 3 seems relatively undamaged.
The odor of burned G10 (the heaters?) was detected.
The Be window ~2m downstream also broke & blew into the scattering chamber.

(What's left of) The loops:
lower part,
best shot,
sideways,
upper part mostly,
looking upstream,
looking downstream,
zoom of D2 loop,
SOS Window Here you see a hole (the only one there is) in the upper right corner of the window, plus the shrapnel pattern on the window itself. The dimples did not penetrate the window.
A picture of the downstream Be window flange, looking upstream (I think), taken after the LOVA.
A picture of the downstream beamline taken after the LOVA.
