CLAS

Overview.

The Cerenkov detectorrs will be used in CLAS to identify electrons and to separate them from other charged particles, mostly pions.

A GEANT[1] - based program package was developed to study the Cerenkov detector response - CC package [2].

This report contains a short description of this package , including recent improvements, and results of the Cerenkov detector response analysis mostly based on simulations using this package.

The main items covered in this report are:

• Software support of Cerenkov detector design.
  • Motivation for the choice of radiator gas.
  • Implemention of additional mirrors.
  • Optimization of mirror positions for maximum electron detection efficiency
  • The required accuracy for the mirror positioning.
  • Alignment procedure for the mirror system.
  • Simulations of trigger schemes.

• Software support for physics proposals.
  • Detailed estimates of electron detection efficiencies.

This package is ready to be used as part of the GEANT description of CLAS (GSIM) for the study of user-defined exclusive electron - nuclear reactions.
