Who are we?

The Laser Processing Consortium (LPC) is a partnership of private and public interests that was formed in July 1993 to develop advanced manufacturing techniques based on the technology of high average power free electron lasers (FEL). The mission of the LPC is to plan and implement two significant technology demonstrations over the next decade: (1) the design, construction and operation of a kilowatt class IR/UV FEL, termed the IR/UV Demo, at the consortium's host National Laboratory, the Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA, and (2) the implementation of a wide range of materials processing demonstrations using the IR/UV Demo, to be carried out by the consortium's industry and university partners.

Joining the LPC

  1. Industry Partners
    U.S. based industries, can become members of the LPC by sending a Letter of Intent (to the address below) which contains the following information:

    1. Identify your company's interest in at least one application of laser processing. Applications which have been identified by the existing consortium partners are described in Chapter 2 of Reference 1 and include applications for surface processing of polymers, metals, and electronic materials, micromachining and materials analysis.

    2. Identify and describe briefly, (using non-proprietary information) your company's program for developing laser processing technology or potential interest in laser processing for any of the applications identified above (1).

    3. Identify where your company's R&D program for laser processing or potential interest in laser processing would benefit from R&D activities using the IR/UV Demo.

      1. Outline potential process development or process demonstrations that could be done with laser light produced with the IR/UV Demo.

      2. Identify specific contributions that your company would plan to bring to the IR/UV Demo user facility when the IR/UV Demo becomes operational in 1999. These contributions should be listed in an "Appendix A" of the Letter of Intent and the method of evaluation of these contributions should be noted. [The text of Appendix A will be treated as "business sensitive" information by the consortium and only a summary description of the contributions and total dollar value will be used in public documents.] Please indicate whether any of the above equipment or facilities would be made available for use by other consortium members and on what basis.

      3. Identify any specific contributions that your company would dedicate for funding preliminary experiments, laser equipment design and fabrication, associate R&D, etc., prior to operation of the IR/UV Demo.

      4. Identify any specific contributions your company could make towards the design and construction costs of the IR/UV Demo laser and user facility. These contributions will be deductible from the user fees that will be charged when the IR/UV Demo becomes fully operational (presently estimated user fees are $700/hr.).

    4. Define metrics for successful participation within the consortium. What are your company's goals for development of laser processing? Can these goals be advanced through use of the IR/UV Demo and the follow-on phase II device?

    5. Define your company's projected need of a phase II device, assuming successful development activities on the phase 1 IR/UV Demo. Would projected high volume processing require on-site high power (> 10 kW) FELs within your company's production facilities, or would off-site FEL service facilities meet production requirements?

    6. Provide the name of a company liaison who would serve as the company's representative for consortium business and communications.

  2. University and Non-Profit Institution Partners
    Universities and non-profit research institutions can become members of the LPC by sending a Letter of Intent (to the address listed below which contains the following information:

    1. A principal investigator from the institution making application to the LPC should identify an interest in at least one application of laser processing. Applications which have been identified by industry consortium partners are described in chapter 2 of Ref. 1 and include applications for surface processing of polymers, metals, and electronic materials, micromachining and materials analysis.

    2. Identify and describe briefly your institution's research and development program for laser processing for any of the applications identified above (1). Note any existing or potential collaborations with LPC industry partners on industry identified applications.

    3. Identify where your institution's R&D program for laser processing or laser technology, or potential interest in laser processing or high average power laser technology would benefit from R&D activities using the IR/UV Demo.

      1. Outline potential laser processing R&D problems that could be investigated with the IR/UV Demo.

      2. Outline potential laser technology problems which could be investigated with the design and operation of the IR/UV Demo.

      3. Identify specific contributions that your institution would plan to bring to the IR/UV Demo user facility when the IR/UV Demo becomes operational in 1999. These contributions should be listed in an "Appendix A" of the Letter of Intent and the method of evaluation of these contributions should be noted. [The text of Appendix A will be treated as "business sensitive" information by the consortium and only a summary description of the contributions and total dollar value will be used in public documents.] Please indicate whether any of the above equipment or facilities would be made available for use by other consortium members and on what basis.

      4. Identify any specific contributions your institution could make towards the design and construction costs of the IR/UV Demo laser and user facility including plans for submitting related proposals to funding agencies.

    4. Provide the name of a company liaison who could serve as the company's representative for consortium business and communications.
