Chris Guthrie

Chris Guthrie is a former Newport News Shipbuilding Mechanical Designer. In November 2001 he got his start as a Machinist Apprentice at the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School where he learned the machining trade, techniques, and small-to-medium assembly practices. After 2 years of working within the trades, Chris was accepted into the Design Apprenticeship program, which provided several rotations throughout different engineering departments within the shipyard, providing a wide array of experience. As part of his apprenticeship, Chris earned his Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology with a concentration in marine design from Thomas Nelson Community College. After completing his apprenticeship in 2006, Chris was quickly designated the lead designer for Advanced Arresting Gear and Barricade systems for CVN78 Class Aircraft Carriers where he designed and integrated machinery components for flight critical systems along with jigs and fixtures for assembly and installation. In 2018 Chris was assigned to the Advanced Weapons Elevator Waterfront Engineering Team and worked alongside machinery installation trades to help bring the installation of key elevator components into operational specifications. After commissioning and certification of all Weapons Elevators on CVN78, Chris was assigned as lead Designer for Advanced Weapons Elevators in 2022 until he joined the Hall B Team at Jefferson Lab in June 2023.
