Hall B Scientific Staff Bios


William Phelps


William Phelps joined Jefferson Lab as a joint Staff Scientist and an Assistant Professor at Christopher Newport University (CNU) starting in the fall of 2019. He studied at CNU for his bachelor's in applied physics followed by a Master's and Ph.D. in physics from Florida International University, graduating with his Ph.D. in 2017. Prior to joining CNU and Jefferson Lab he was a postdoctoral research scientist at The George Washington University from 2017 until 2019. He has been involved in photoproduction and quasi-real photoproduction experiments in CLAS and CLAS12 in Hall B and GlueX in Hall D. He is a co-spokesperson of one experiment. Since 2014 he has been involved in the construction, calibration, and maintenance of the High Threshold Cherenkov Counter. He has also made significant contributions to CLAS12 offline software, in particular to the GROOT plotting and fitting package.

Current Responsibilities in Hall B:

  • Maintenance of the CLAS12 High Threshold Cherenkov Counter (HTCC)
  • Development of CLAS12 offline software
