Letter from Cardman to the Reviewers --------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for your willingness to help with the review of the plan of electronics for the GlueX/Hall D project at Jefferson Lab. I understand that you have already been contacted by Alex Dzierba, the GlueX spokesperson. The GlueX/Hall D project is a major component of the planned JLab upgrade to 12 GeV and it includes construction of a new beamline, detector and experimental hall. We are awaiting CD-0 approval but in the meantime the GlueX collaboration has been active on various R&D projects as suggested an earlier external review of the project chaired by David Cassel of Cornell. In anticipation of a full-scale "Lehmann" review of the GlueX/Hall D project we are reviewing various aspects of the GlueX design: calorimetry, electronics and tracking. We are asking you and Glenn Young to help with the review of the electronics. The review will be held at Jefferson Lab on Wednesday July 23 and Thursday July 24. We propose to start at 8:30 am on July 23 with a four-hour presentation of the project and electronics by various members of the collaboration. That will be followed by an executive session (of perhaps two-three hours including lunch) after which you will meet with the collaborators to address issues that might require more infomation. We will close the first day with a dinner. The first few hours of the following day will start with the collaboration members addressing issues raised on the previous day. You will have the remainder of the morning to prepare a draft of your report. The final closeout - a meeting with several of the collaboration members and me will take place by noon. I am asking you to concentrate on these aspects of the electronics: o Is the GlueX electronic design sound? Are any special areas of concern that deserve special study? o Does the collaboration have a sensible plan for management and are their estimates of manpower needs realistic? Also, do they have a realistic milestones as we prepare for the Lehmann review and beyond to construction? o Are there any major items missing in thier list of R&D tasks? Is the priority given to each appropriate at this stage? o Are there technologies or developments which we have overlooked that may allow cost savings and/or improved technical performance? A tentative agenda for the first half of July 23 is included below. Please feel free to provide feedback on this agenda directly to Alex Dzierba. The collaboration will supply other written material to you no later than July 7. I understand that you already have received a copy of the GlueX/Hall D Design Report. Please contact Rachel Harris (757-269-7255 or harris@jlab.org) for help with travel arrangements. Members of our staff will help with all aspects of the review and preparing your report. I realize that this service is an imposition on your busy schedule and I want to express my appreciation for your help in this project. Sincerely, Lawrence Cardman
