Minutes of the IR FEL Beam Transport Meeting, August 22, 1996

Meetings are held every other Thursday in Room 84, Trailer City at 1:30 P.M.

ATTENDEES: G. Biallas, L. Dillon-Townes, K. Jordan, G. Krafft, C. Murray, M. Wiseman

Decisions/Comments:

Note the new meeting schedule

D. Douglas and R. Legg request a separate power supply for the optical chicane dipoles because, for first light mode, the residual field in the First Reverse Bend Dipole would have to brought to zero. This difference in residual field from the remainder of the string would be difficult to eliminate during subsequent operation.

Action Items:

L. Dillon-Townes/C. Murray/B. Yunn - Maintain latest layout/ schedule the completion of the definition of the vacuum tube at all discontinuities by 8/15/96, refine impedance analyses and write the Tech. Note. Definition of discontinuities remains at about 85%.

G. Biallas - Get the BT contracts signed. Contracts needed to be changed to new DIMAD configuration. due this week, not done.

A. Guerra - Start definition of a girder for the wiggler, diagnostics and quad telescopes that maintains position of the elements within 50 µm (0.002 in.) during change-out of the wiggler. A. Guerra looking at a home made bench. CERN adjuster found. May be meant for heavier loads.

G. Biallas/L. Harwood - Provide a good value for field enhancement factor for the style of magnets we are anticipating. Verify the K value of 0.45 that D. Douglas uses in his optics calculations. Magnet is assembled and ready for measurement.

M. Wiseman - Thermal analysis of the 45 MeV Dump for 50 kW & beam scraper analysis for 45, 79 and 200 MeV. Some progress made.

C. Bohn - Check D. Douglas' numbers on the new DIMAD. Best done by J. Van Ziejts.

C. Bohn - Determine the position of the beam scrapers by September 18. They are about 12 inches long. No progress.

D. Douglas - Create an Alignment Specification for the elements.

New Action Items :

W. Merz/K. Jordan - Define the power supply for use with the optical chicane Dipoles

L. Dillon-Townes/C. Murray - Add the two slits to the injection region.

Completed Action Items :

J. Karn - Test a Prototype Sparse Lamination Quad. QB core superior to sparse lamination core. QB Core meets the D. Douglas specifications when used on a 2.5 A. hysteresis loop. Complete.

G. Biallas/R. Legg - (Reopened) Determine what is the best method of bending pulsed beam into the dump during cryomodule phasing. D. Douglas created a new DIMAD using the two magnet scheme using wedge dipoles. Complete.

New Action Items for the Vacuum Meeting:

Reports for September 19, 1996

G. Biallas

In general, we are dropping behind by about a month. More personnel are going to be available in the engineering Department to make this up.

Detailed design of the 180° Bend Dipoles by Vinnie at Northrop Grumman has progressed to the detail stage after the shape of the steel and the lead configuration of the leads has been worked out.

The prototype reverse bend has been measured, yielding a K of .6 rather than .45 that D. Douglas was expecting.

The design of the Trim Quad QT is beginning to take shape. J. Karn and L. Harwood want to make a prototype.

The Weak Quad (QG) will be made with the 5 A. small coils. No change in the trim cards is expected is to be needed. E. Feldl is re writing the specs to get the contract s out.

L. Dillon-Towns is composing the list of vacuum components to put on order and C. Murray is now available to resume design of the vacuum components.
