Minutes of the IR FEL Beam Transport Meeting, August 8, 1996

Meetings are held in Room 84, Trailer City on Thursday at 1:30 P.M.

ATTENDEES: S. Benson, G. Biallas, C. Bohn, L. Dillon-Townes, K. Jordan, J. Karn, G. Krafft, W. Merz, C. Murray, G. Neil, C. Rode, M. Wiseman

Decisions/Comments:

Several branches of the tree on the Web disappeared last week. They are being restored, but we must be careful in dealing with the Web.

Action Items:

L. Dillon-Townes/C. Murray/B. Yunn - Maintain latest layout/ schedule the completion of the definition of the vacuum tube at all discontinuities by 8/15/96, refine impedance analyses and write the Tech. Note. Definition of discontinuities remains only half finished .

G. Biallas - Get the BT contracts signed. Contracts needed to be changed to new DIMAD configuration. No action.

A. Guerra - Start definition of a girder for the wiggler, diagnostics and quad telescopes that maintains position of the elements within 50 µm (0.002 in.) during change-out of the wiggler. Optics table will cost $7000. G. Biallas to hunt out CERN adjuster for use on the table in a difficult position to reach.

G. Biallas/L. Harwood - Provide a good value for field enhancement factor for the style of magnets we are anticipating. Verify the K value of 0.45 that D. Douglas uses in his optics calculations. The Prototype dipole core is in final machining. Coils

G. Biallas - Examine the categories on the Web and propose alterations. Some progress on the Injector Test Stand, web Titles. Given to Donna for posting. No progress.

J. Karn - Test a Prototype Sparse Lamination Quad. Quad tested but at the second priority on the Test Area. C. Bohn will try to get priorities change. We need to not be dead in the water every time the CEBA attempts to take precedence.

M. Wiseman - Thermal analysis of the 45 MeV Dump for 50 kW & beam scraper analysis for 45, 79 and 200 MeV. Some progress made.

R. Legg - Check D. Douglas' numbers on the new DIMAD. Started

C. Bohn - Determine the position of the beam scrapers by September 18. They are about 12 inches long. No progress.

New Action Items :

D. Douglas - Create an Alignment Specification for the elements.

G. Biallas - Since the major dipoles will have 2 inch gaps, determine if the a measurement probe will be necessary and if so if we can borrow one from another Lab rather than make a new one at 1.875 Dia.

G. Biallas/R. Legg - (Reopened) Determine what is the best method of bending pulsed beam into the dump during cryomodule phasing. Operations folks don't like the alternate phasing as a solution and we don't want to make exotic extraction chicane dipoles that have a factor of 8 in range. Therefore, determine if the proposal is viable to make something like two strong, double BMs as two extra bends on either side of the first extraction chicane dipole through L. Harwood & D. Douglas.

C. Bohn - Get D. Douglas to publish bunch lengths .

New Action Items for the Vacuum Meeting:

Put quick closing valve in the Extraction Dump Line.

Summary of Minutes from July 7, 1996 Vacuum Meeting

None held

New Action Items from the Diagnostics/Commissioning Meeting:

K. Jordan - Resolve the discontinuity between the lack of wake field effects in a 6 inch wide beam tube vs. the claim by J. P. Denard that a button BPM will see the beam at the 90° point of the 180° Dipole.

Completed Action Items:

C. Bohn - Revisit the decision to install auto-steer . Closed.

D. Douglas - Determine the diagnostics needs in the injection line. BPMs now added. Closed .

Reports for August 9, 1996

G. Biallas

The data for the design of the 180° Bend Dipoles was sent to Vinnie at Northrop Grumman for detailing.

The copper conductor order was placed for the large dipole strings.
