Minutes of the IR FEL Beam Transport Meeting, October 24, 1996

Next Meeting: Thursday October 31, in Room 84, Trailer City at 1:30 P.M.

ATTENDEES: G. Biallas, C. Bohn, L. Dillon-Townes, D. Douglas, E. Feldl, J. Karn, C. Rode

Schedule Comments, Decisions and other Comments:

The dumps have now been added to the standard DIMAD by D. Kehne & D. Douglas.

G. Krafft is requesting an additional 1 m. of beam line in the after cryomodule end of the machine for an M56 Monitor. This may be able to be accommodated if D. Douglas does a last optimization after the final value of K is obtained.

D. Douglas reports that the straight ahead dump will not require QBs to blow up the beam.

Due to the change in position, both Multislits have to be shielded.

Action Items:

G. Biallas - Get the BT contracts signed. Contracts needed to be changed to new DIMAD configuration. Due last month, not done.

A. Guerra - Start definition of a girder for the wiggler, diagnostics and quad telescopes that maintains position of the elements within 50 µm (0.002 in.) during change-out of the wiggler. A. Guerra looking at a home made bench. CERN adjuster information obtained through Will Oren and passed to A. Guerra. Design will be in-house, not Northrop Grumman.

G. Biallas/L. Harwood - Provide a good value for field enhancement factor for the style of magnets we are anticipating. Result of the prototype saddle coil tests indicate a K Value of .43 compared to the .45 of the design. The field from the ends, though much improved, is still 6 gauss at 30 cm. from the end. The existing DIMAD doesn't model this much end field. J. Karn is having F. Humphry and the shop build a field clamp on overtime. D. Douglas still wants to optimize the magnet angles and positions.

M. Wiseman - Thermal analysis of the 45 MeV Dump for 50 kW & beam scraper analysis for 45, 79 and 200 MeV. Mark reports the dump design is good for 60 kW. C. Bohn requested that the design be checked at the 80 kW of a 75 MeV beam for the upgrade to 1 µm light. If it doesn't work, what is the change or add on to make it work? S. Benson stated that a longer optical cavity would bring down the dump power for the 1 µm machine.

J. Karn - Make the prototype Trim Quad by Oct. 16. Bumped in the shop by CEBA and ITS magnets. J. Karn will request overtime to speed it up.

C. Murray/L. Dillon-Townes - D. Douglas needs room to put a skew quad at the ends of the cryomodule. He will provide geometry to C. Murray. May superpose on the correctors. K. Jordan to be aware that 4 new trim circuits are needed.

C. Murray/L. Dillon-Townes - Add a current monitor to the end of the Cryomodule. Most likely, this will be a ceramic break.

G. Krafft - Determine quantity of insertable dumps. Do they have to be isolated? In process.

J. Parkinson - Establish how we will clean vacuum chamber pipes. No report.

D. Douglas - With D. Kehne, resolve beam spot sizes at energy-recovery and straight ahead dumps. The straight ahead dump spot sizes are complete.

New Action Items :

Finalize the diagnostics and declare a base line design for area one at the injection point by the end of next week.

E. Feldl - Transmit the results on the linear range of the BPMs from R. Ursic to D. Douglas.

Completed Action Items :

C. Bohn - Check D. Douglas' numbers on the new DIMAD. Best done by J. Van Ziejts. No progress. Postponed until the final DIMAD after a K value is established.

G. Krafft - Determine requirements for straight-ahead "First Light" dump. Complete. Tech note #TN-96-056 published.

L. Dillon-Townes - Resolve number and location of electrostatic precipitators. Complete. One additional will go after the Quartercryomodule and another will go just before the straight-ahead Dump.

E. Feldl - Get the procurement package for the Weak Quads to Procurement by the end of September. In procurement, assigned to r. Lusk.

New Action Items for the Vacuum Meeting:

None
