Items of Discussion
- D. Douglas gave an update to the Magnet Performance Integration Plan.
It is presently on version 1.90 with release scheduled at ver. 2.0.
The document presently has 9 sections and 7 levels and is 80% complete.
Dave went on to explain that the document also defines when the task
is complete. After the overview of the plan, we discussed the DW's,
an application of the plan. The DW's meet several of the field specs,
but 3 out of the 7 measured failed to meet the integrated field flatness
spec. The data had only been taken Tuesday morning and it was not
yet clear why there was a problem. Kevin suggested a geometry
effect related to the coil packs and perhaps swapping coils might help.
Dave said that the coils must be installed in particular ways to meet
mechanical tolerances around the magnets. Bob asked about shims to fix
the problem. Dave said that without remeasuring every article, shims
might introduce field errors of another kind and we wouldn't know.
The other question was do we need the entire 9 cm aperture? And Dave
said the aperture was chosen as a 6 sigma plus 2 cm aperture and is
consistent with the quads, so stopping down the aperture to meet the
field integral spec would also cut the acceptance. Dave's plan is to
allow Jeff Karn to re-examine the data and then check the end fields.
The measurements will take about 1/2 day after Jeff and Dave decide
what to do.
The other question is that as a statistical group, the DWs probably
meet spec and could be installed. The one problem is that without
knowing what type of error the data indicates, we cannot model it and
we could install a set of magnets which would lead to a long term
commitment to setup by "tweaking".
For the time being Jeff will re-examine the data for the source of the
flaw.
- Bob said that the commissioning schedule was going to be changed to
adopt Kevin's suggestion that we go as far in the machine as possible before
Christmas and work the problems during the January down.
New Issues
- Geoff wrote a memo concerning the commissioning schedule which
pointed out that
the schedule did not allow time to characterize the accelerator. the
schedule only allowed time to press-on to program milestones. Bob agreed
with that and explained that with the present funding limits, a
demonstration that the accelerator CAN work was important. Fred said that
the schedule shouldn't be obsessed with demonstrations to secure funding
and that finding funding was his job.
