Addenda/Errata to Previous Minutes

C. Bohn announced that he is slated to give biweekly updates to M7, with the first scheduled for Monday morning, 20 Oct 97. He followed by presenting a preview of Monday's update. Included is a detailed discussion and projection of manpower requirements to support the roles of Principal Investigator, commissioning "teamlets", System Owner, and Performance Integrator. Definitions of these terms were also discussed. Because the FEL Project is, by "necessity", resource-limited, there are some unknowns in how to implement these roles, or whether all of them are absolutely necessary. What IS clear is that FEL participants need to be flexible and communicate well with one another. This is, for example, especially true between Principal Investigators and members of their commissioning teamlets. Regardless, Bohn considered feedback from this meeting to be helpful and will implement it in communicating to M7 Monday

Regarding the shift schedule that has been circulated, the purpose of formulating it was mostly to communicate quickly an idea of the level of manpower needed to commission the FEL per Division priorities. By contrast, it is not set in stone, nor could it be even in principle. Changes in sequencing activities will likely arise (as they already have on the injector). Changes in staffing are "permitted" and expected, and it is incumbent on Principal Investigators to staff their activities appropriately and let the Commissioning Coordinator know in advance who the participants will be. The Commissioning Coordinator stands ready to advise and assist in this process, and he does not wish to, nor will he, micromanage it. On the other hand, he WILL make decisions in cases where there are ambiguities or holes in a Principal Investigator's planning.

Bohn also followed up with the status of "commissioning procedures needed before 1 Oct 97". They are reproduced below, and follow-up on the open items will continue periodically until they are completed satisfactorily. Responsible parties and deadlines are indicated:

  • Injector Setup (status: 100% complete)

  • Cryomodule Setup (status: 90% complete)

  • First Light Setup (status: 25% complete)

  • Coherent Synchrotron Radiation vs. Emittance (status: 75% complete)

Top-Level Procedure for Threading Beam through Full Machine (status: metaprocedure exists but needs elaboration. Douglas, 1 Dec 97)

Clearly the requirement is to have all of this documentation in place by 1 Dec 97, which is consistent with the existing commissioning schedule, and the deadline should not be overly taxing on the authors, all of whom are participating in the commissioning that has already begun.

    New Issues

Criteria are required for transferring the FEL as a User Facility to the Operations Department. Bohn will work this intermittently with M7.
