PRESENTATION SUBMISSIONS CLOSED

Thanks to everyone who has agreed to speak at the Summit. We've got a full slate of really interesting technical talks, so the proposal form is now closed.

PGP KEY SIGNING: BRING ID & KNOW YOUR FINGERPRINT

Just a reminder, if you're planning to participate in the PGP key signing, please be sure to send me your public key ahead of time. Also, you will need to present ID at the signing event, so please bring a photo ID (US driver's license, DOE Federal badge or your passport). Finally, you're going to be asked to verify your PGP key fingerprint, so please be sure to bring your own copy of it. Don't rely on the version I'm distributing to attendees!

I'm really looking forward to this Summit. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email or by phone at (757) 269-5268.

The DOE Network Security Monitoring Technical Summit is only 2 1/2 weeks away! We've gotten a fantastic response, with representatives from 12 different DOE organizations and sites attending so far. Please see below for a few important announcements.

PRESENTATION DEADLINE

Please note that there is no specific deadline for proposing a presentation; it's first come, first served until all slots are spoken for. However, if you wish to have us make copies of your talk for the attendees, please email the presentation materials to mailto:bianco@jlab.org by COB Thursday, May 1st.

There are still a couple of slots left, so it's not too late to propose a presentation! You can do this online at:

http://conferences.jlab.org/NMS/

IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED

As you know, this meeting is being held at the OUO level in order to help foster a sense of open communication between the participants. As part of this, we have instructed our conference registration staff members to verify your ID when you check in for the meeting. Please be sure to have one of the following available when you check in:

Site-specific badges will not be accepted.

PGP KEY SIGNING

We've had a couple of requests from our attendees to provide a venue for analysts to verify and exchange PGP keys, so we've decided to host an official key signing event during the conference.

Participation is quite simple. Just generate a PGP key (if you do not already have one), and provide the following pieces of information:

A few days before the summit, we'll mail out a list of all names, addresses and key fingerprints, along with the complete public keyring, to all attendees. During the Summit itself, we'll set aside a time where each attendee can confirm that their entry on the list is correct. Participants will need to present their ID at this event as well (see "IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED", above).

If this sounds confusing, don't worry. We're pretty much following the "Sassaman-Projected" key signing party algorithm, which is described here:

http://www.keysigning.org/methods/sassaman-projected

It's actually pretty straightforward, and not as confusing as it seems.

If you wish to participate in the key signing, please email your key details to mailto:bianco@jlab.org no later than 1 May 2008. Be sure to include the phrase "NSM Summit PGP Info" in the subject line!

IT'S STILL NOT TOO LATE!

Remember, it's still not too late to sign up to attend the summit! Registration and travel information can be found online at:

http://conferences.jlab.org/NMS/

This is going to be a very productive (and, I hope, fun) meeting. Don't miss it!

From: David J. Bianco mailto:bianco@jlab.org

We've had a terrific response so far for the DOE Network Security Monitoring Technical Summit, so I'm very happy to announce that the conference website is available now at the following URL:

http://conferences.jlab.org/NMS/index.html

The website has all the travel and lodging information you need to fill out those travel request, as well as online attendee registration and presentation proposal forms.

Speaking of which, some folks have asked me if there's a deadline for submitting a proposal for a presentation. There is no hard deadline, and proposals will continue to be accepted until all speaking slots are filled (proposals after that will be waitlisted). However, I have already received several proposals, and it looks like they are filling up fast. If you have something you'd like to talk about, don't wait! Fill out your proposal today!

DOE Network Security Monitoring Technical Summit
May 8th and 9th
Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab)
Newport News, VA

OVERVIEW

Are you doing enough to monitor your networks for malware infections, hacker attacks, phishing scams and insider abuses? How does your monitoring program compare with those at other DOE facilities? Have you got something special to share, or are there tools and techniques you'd like to "liberate" from other sites? Maybe you'd just like the chance to sit down and have a deeply technical chat with your fellow DOE cybersecurity analysts?

These are just a few of the many great reasons to attend the DOE Network Security Monitoring Technical Summit!

Hosted by Jefferson Lab, nestled in the heart of scenic Newport News, VA, the Summit will provide a rare opportunity for technical cybersecurity staff to network with their peers from other DOE facilities, to learn about their successes (and failures?) and to discover valuable new tools and techniques for performing Intrusion Detection/Prevention and Network Security Monitoring.

MEETING OVERVIEW

As the name implies, the DOE Network Security Monitoring Technical Summit is intended to be a TECHNICAL meeting of practicing cybersecurity analysts from all parts of DOE. Managers are welcome to attend, but the focus is on presenting practical technical information, not policies, procedures or guidelines.

The meeting will be conducted at the Official Use Only (OUO) level, so that participants may feel free to discuss their specific Network Security Monitoring programs in detail.

The Summit will take place over one and half days, allowing attendees to head home early on Friday, if desired.

Topics for discussion include, but are not limited to:

CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS & DISCUSSIONS

Do you have something really cool you'd like to share with your peers? Or perhaps you'd like to volunteer to lead a roundtable on a topic that's near and dear to your heart. Contact us (see "FOR MORE INFORMATION" below) to set it up!

The meeting's success depends on the willingness of the attendees to share their thoughts and experiences, so don't be shy!

LOCATION

The DOE Network Security Monitoring Technical Summit will be held at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab, AKA JLab) in Newport New, VA.

12000 Jefferson Avenue
Newport News, VA 23606

You can find detailed information about the facility, including travel directions, maps, accomodations and more on our web site:

REGISTRATION & FEES

Registration for the Summit is not yet open. Another announcement will be made in a few days when the registration system is online.

There will be a $70 registration fee to attend this Summit. As the Summit will be conducted at the OUO level, registrations are subject to verification with the DOE facility's CIO or cybersecurity program manager.

The meeting will be limited to 30 attendees, so don't delay! Register today!
