Training Expiration

Expired Training

RadCon is instituting a new policy regarding expired Radiation Worker I (RW-I) training and General Employee Radiation Training (GERT).  GERT is required to access controlled areas (including the accelerator site).  Individuals that access radiologically controlled areas (RCAs) require RW-I qualification and a personnel dosimeter.  RW-I training grants credit for GERT qualification.

RadCon has identified a gap in the training process by which an individual could take GERT following RW-I expiration to retain accelerator site access and keep their dosimeter.  The policy change is to limit the ability to take a lower level of training while maintaining dosimetry.  This will help ensure staff are aware of their current radiological qualification and reduce the likelihood of inappropriate entries into RCAs.

RadCon will institute the following changes starting Monday, November 21, 2022:

  • If you complete GERT training AFTER your RW-I training has expired, without surrendering your dosimeter, the GERT qualification will be revoked.
  • You will lose unescorted access to the Accelerator Site and other controlled areas.

To have access reinstated, you must surrender your dosimeter to RadCon. The dosimeter will be returned upon completion of Radiation Worker training (typically SAF801T).

If you no longer wish to maintain Radiation Worker qualification, you should notify RadCon upon relinquishing your dosimeter and have your supervisor update your JTA.

Extensions

All qualifications expire on the calendar date, two years from the date of the last training completion.  The maximum allowable extension of your qualification is 30 days, at your supervisor's written request.

If you are a Radiation Worker, possession of a dosimeter does not authorize you to enter RCAs once your training has expired. Reminders of upcoming training expiration are provided if the training is a part of your required qualifications.  However, the responsibility for maintaining training qualification rests with the employee and his/her supervisor.  If you are a Radiation Worker and your training expires, the following things will occur:

  • Your authorization to enter RCAs is immediately revoked.
  • Your dosimeter will be pulled, and will not be reissued unless your supervisor requests an administrative extension of your training OR you take the RW-I exam.
  • If your dosimeter has been pulled, you will need to retrieve it from the Dosimetry Office. Contact Becky Mosbrucker at 757-269-7236.
