On Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 1:30-3 p.m., join the Engineering Division for a celebration of Engineering Week in the CEBAF Center auditorium and via Zoom. Come honor the lab’s many skilled and talented engineers with a reception and refreshments from 1:30-2 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. presentation from Chris Hall, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District Engineer, on the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion Project.
A licensed professional engineer in Virginia and Ohio, Hall brings nearly 30 years of experience in leadership roles with the United States Army and the Army Corps of Engineers to his current position at VDOT. In February 2023, he added the $3.9 billion HRBT Expansion Project to the district, the largest construction project in Virginia’s history. Increasing capacity at one of the region’s most congested chokepoints by widening Interstate 64 from Hampton to Norfolk, the project includes the construction of new twin two-lane tunnels and the rehabilitation or replacement of 25 bridges and overpasses. Hall’s presentation will highlight the cutting-edge technology being used to construct VDOT’s first bored tunnel and the engineering challenges in delivering this transformative project.
