Jefferson Lab Colloquium - Keith Furutani

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 4 p.m., Keith Furutani of Mayo Clinic will present "Carbon Ion Radiation Therapy" in the CEBAF Center auditorium and via Zoom.

Abstract: In November 2019, Mayo Clinic Florida (MCF) announced the construction of the first Carbon Ion Radiation Therapy (CIRT) center in the United States in Jacksonville, Florida. The building is near completion with particle therapy equipment installation beginning this year. The Mayo Clinic Florida Treatment Control System is an advancement on previous particle therapy treatment facilities designed specifically for motion management. The Mayo Clinic Florida Treatment Planning System is a graphic processing unit Monte Carlo calculation that includes nuclear modeling designed to provide both fast and accurate ion beam radiation biological dosimetry. It also includes robust optimization, adaptive planning, and real-time, patient-specific quality assurance. Finally, the Mayo Clinic Florida Microdosimetric Kinetic Model (MKM) is an advancement that remains consistent with previously used radiation biological models, such as the modified MKM used in Japan. Presented by the Biomedical Research and Innovation Center, this seminar will give an overview of the design and construction of the MCF CIRT center followed by a question-and-answer session.
