Jefferson Lab Scintimammography Project
The Detector Group at Jefferson Lab is collaborating with the Radiology Department at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. VA and Dilon Technologies Inc., a company in Virginia, on medical instrumentation project to improve breast cancer detection. The Jefferson Lab Detector Group has built an economical portable application specific gamma-ray imaging detector for scintimammography. The instrument will undergo clinical trials at UVA.
The above two photos are of two small gamma camera prototypes being tested at the University of Virginia Medical Center. The gamma cameras are next to a conventional three-head SPECT imager using an anthropomorphic torso phantom to simulate clinical settings.
The above two photos show how the compact camera could be used with patients in the prone position.
