Foreign Workers and Social Security Numbers
Social Security Numbers are used to report wages to the government. Social Security numbers can be assigned to foreign workers who are authorized to work in the United States. Information regarding application, forms, etc. can be found at the following url:

The Social Security Administration now requires that information submitted by international students and exchange visitors be verified by the Department of Homeland Security before issuing a Social Security Number.
- If SS Office can verify documents on-line immediately with INS, the time for receipt of a SS# is the normal 2 weeks.
- If SS Office cannot verify documents on-line, after a waiting period of 10 days, copies of the documents are sent to the INS for verification. This can take up to a waiting period of 3-12 weeks.
- The SS Office no longer issues SS#s for the sole purpose of obtaining a driver's license.
