DEIA Event Calendar
Just Desserts-Women in Innovation & Inventorship: Thursday, March 14, at 3:00 PM in CC Room L102 and via Teams
RTPO and the DEIA Council will host a special Just Desserts Innovation Series event focused on amplifying and supporting women in innovation. Join the event for a lively conversation with panelists Michelle Shinn of the DOE Office of Science, the lab’s Anne-Marie Valente, and Nancy Mortar of Canon Virginia on breaking down the barriers and assumptions women face in business and innovation. The panel will discuss both easy and challenging ways that mentors, allies and systems can promote more innovation activity by women through patenting, entrepreneurship and continuous improvement efforts. Light refreshments will be served.
The DEIA team is thrilled to announce the launch of the lab’s new DEIA Book Club, a space for colleagues to come together to explore stories, gain new perspectives and foster meaningful discussions. The first book the club will read is “Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When the Stakes Are High, Third Edition,” a selection of the DOE’s DEIA, Training and Organizational Development Division. HBCU Spirit Day: Tuesday, February 20, 2024 @ 12:00 PM in CEBAF Center.
Get connected with your colleagues for a visual celebration honoring our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at noon in the CEBAF Center atrium! You're encouraged to proudly showcase your support for HBCUs by wearing your HBCU spirit gear, such as t-shirts, hats and sweatshirts featuring HBCU logos, for a group photo at noon. Bring your lunch, stay and connect with colleagues if you have time!
Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Monday, Jan. 15, 2024
On behalf of the DEIA council, we express our gratitude for the enduring impact of Martin Luther King Jr., who dedicated his life to justice, equality, and civil rights. Commemorating MLK Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the transformative legacy of Dr. King. This year, we hope you have the opportunity to actively engage in a learning activity, whether watching a program on TV, attending a local event or participating in discussions within our community. May we continue to let this day serve as a catalyst for ongoing conversations and actions that support Dr. King’s dream for unity and justice. DEIA council ambassadors are dedicated representatives advocating for DEIA at the Jefferson Lab. They actively collaborate to support DEIA programs, initiatives, and education. Our DEIA ambassadors' champion DEIA practices, striving to ensure inclusive representation of perspectives to foster innovation and promote an enriched scientific community and workplace.

On Tuesday, February 13, 2024, members of the JLab team attended the Old Dominion University Women's Initiative Network (ODU WIN) Speaker Series. The speaker was Dr. Mae Jemison, an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. Dr. Jemison delivered an inspiring discussion about her passion for science and the arts, space exploration, and embracing life without fear. The ODU WIN celebrated 10 years of connecting women students with local and regional business mentors to promote personal, academic and professional success.
