Workshop on Virtual Compton Scattering

First Circular
Clermont-Ferrand, FRANCE, June 26-29, 1996

Virtual Compton scattering has emerged very recently as a new promising way to access the proton structure in terms of its elementary constituents:

  1. Below pion threshold, virtual Compton scattering gives access to new observables, generalized polarisabilities.

  2. In the resonance region, it is sensitive to resonances that can not be seen through charged particles decay.

  3. At high momentum transfers reachable at ELFE energies (15-30 GeV), real and virtual Compton scattering amplitudes may be interpreted in terms of the wave function of three constituent quarks in the proton.

The workshop will provide an opportunity to confront the theoretical ideas to the possible outcome of experiments on existing and future facilities. Recent experimental results obtained at Mainz as well as proposals for Jefferson Lab and ELFE will be presented. Related topics (real Compton scattering, pi-zero electroproduction,...) will also be discussed.

  1. Program outline

Initially planned for 3 days, the workshop duration has been extended to three and a half days to allow for discussions and additional contributions. Registration and reception will start on Tuesday, June 25th 1996, at 3pm.

The workshop will consist in plenary sessions. Planned speakers are

    A. Afanassev, P.Y. Bertin, M. Distler, D. Drechsel, C. Hyde-Wright, P. Kroll, P. Levy-Sandri, A. L'vov, D. Marchand, A. Metz, A. Nathan, A. Radyushkin, D. Ryckbosch, J. Roche, M. Schumacher, L. Van Hoorebeke, M. Vanderhaeghen.

Saturday morning is left open right now, and could be the opportunity for the different collaborations (VCS TJNAF/Jefferson Lab, VCS Mainz, ELFE, TMR network,...) to meet.

All sessions are plenary. Contributions from participants are welcome. The scientific program will be finalized in view of the contributions.

  2. Organizing Committee
    Vincent Breton, LPC Clermont-Ferrand
    Helene Fonvieille, LPC Clermont-Ferrand
    Pierre Guichon, DAPNIA-Saclay
    Nicole d'Hose, DAPNIA-Saclay
    Charles Hyde-Wright, Old Dominion University
    Eddy Offermann, Jefferson Lab
    Thomas Walcher, Mainz

  3. Proceedings

Proceedings of the workshop will only include written contributions available at the time of the workshop. Participants wishing to contribute to the proceedings are therefore requested to bring a copy of their written contribution and give it to the workshop secretary.

  4. Registration

Registration will take place Tuesday June 25th and Wednesday June 26th at the workshop secretariat, Salle de reunion du Departement de Physique, on the campus. A registration fee of 500 French Francs is requested : it covers attendance to all sessions, a copy of the proceedings, coffee breaks, bus tickets and lunch meals at the campus cafeteria. Payment at the workshop secretariat should be made in French Francs. Foreign currency is exchanged easiest upon arrival at the airports. Travellers cheques and eurocheques may be cashed at local banks during office hours in Clermont-Ferrand.

  5. Housing and meals

Participants can choose between hotels or student rooms at Cite Universitaire Dolet. The hotels listed below will have rooms available for conference participants:

Hotel Marmotel (Two stars) : 263F per night, breakfast included. This hotel is located close to the campus, but a car is needed to go to the city center in the evening.
    Phone : +33-73-26-24-55, Fax : +33-73-27-99-57

Hotel Gallieni (Three stars) : 295F per night, breakfast included. This hotel is in Clermont-Ferrand downtown. City buses shuttles are available to go to the campus and back.
    Phone : +33-73-93-59-69, Fax : +33-73-34-89-29

Dormitary rooms at Cite Universitaire Dolet are single occupancy rooms furnished with one single bed, pillow, chair, closet and bureau. Bed linens, pillows, bath and wash towels are provided. Bathrooms are located in hallways on each floor. The price is 98 Francs per night that will be collected by the workshop secretariat. Breakfasts are served at the Cite's cafeteria (13,20F per breakfast to pay cash) or in cafes nearby.

Lunches will be taken at the campus cafeteria. Evenings are unscheduled: a list of restaurants will be made available.

  6. Transportation

Clermont-Ferrand (400 km south of Paris) is accessible by train, plane and car. Aulnat Airport is 10 km east of Clermont-Ferrand. Car rental service is available (Hertz). Participants will receive maps of Clermont-Ferrand to go from the train station and the airport to their hotel, cite universitaire, and the campus.
