    Student Sponsorship Program
    at the
    Third Latin American Workshop on Nuclear and Heavy Ion Physics;
    San Andres, Colombia, September 13-17, 1999

    We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded a grant from the NSF Americas Program to sponsor students to attend the Third Latin American Workshop on Nuclear and Heavy Ion Physics. This workshop will convene on the tropical island of San Andres, Colombia (located off the coast of Nicaragua) on September 13-17, 1999.

    There will be a dedicated session of five talks on the physics with Jefferson Lab. The purpose of this session is to expose students to Jlab physics, and to strengthen ties between research interests in North and South America.

    The NSF grant will be used to provide financial aid to students who wish to attend the San Andres Workshop, and the special session on the physics with JLab. Students from any country in Latin America as well as from the United States are welcome to apply.

    We invite students who are strongly interested in pursuing graduate studies in nuclear physics to submit a curriculum vita, cover letter, and a letter of recommendation from the student's advisor. We ask that the submissions be electronic (e-mail with attached postscript files).

    For students from U.S. institutions, please submit the files to Dr. Elton Smith (elton@jlab.org). For students in Latin America, please submit the material to both Prof. Juan Carlos Sanabria (jsanabri@uniandes.edu.co or sanabria@jlab.org) and Prof. Fernando Cristancho (fcris@ciencias.ciencias.unal.edu.co).

    The deadline for the applications is Aug. 10. Notification of successful applicants will follow soon thereafter. We are looking forward to a successful conference!

    Sincerely,
    Philip Cole
