Weather Radio Operation Instructions

Weather Alert Radios are placed in buildings and trailers to provide warning of unexpected storms. The radios monitor a special frequency controled by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) /National Weather Services (NWS). We monitor a station in Wakefield, Virginia.

The radio has two operating modes: a listen mode where weather reports are received, and a monitor mode where a visual and audible alarm are activated if NOAA transmits a warning signal. The monitor mode is the normal condition of the radios. NOAA transmits a weekly test alarm, normally on Wednesday between 11:00 A.M. and noon.
