Lawrence, born August 8, 1901, won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1939 for his invention of the cyclotron and was the founder of both Lawrence Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories. To commemorate Lawrence's birthday, here is a photo of Hermann Grunder, JLab's first director, celebrating the "birth" of the Bevalac at Berkeley Lab. The Bevalac was a machine that combined two existing accelerators, the SuperHILAC and the Bevatron. Grunder spent about 17 years at Berkeley Lab before becoming the director of JLab.
