Accelerator Improvement Program

The laboratory has begun major improvement projects to increase the efficiency and reliability of beam delivery using AIP funds that became available in FY94. The recirculator system has been completely overhauled and realigned resulting in reproducible recirculator tunes. Delivery of polarized electrons remains problematic and is aggravated by the presence of only a single polarized gun. This results in long turn-around times following, e.g., crystal replacement. The laboratory is nearing completion of a second polarized gun that should significantly improve this situation. Resources have also been a problem here; the few people in the polarized source group tend to be so occupied with getting beam to experiments that little time has been available for source R&Dand improvements. However, Bates fully realizes the increased physics potential if high polarization beams are available and intends to make delivery of such beams a priority.
