2007 Physics Nobel goes to science behind tiny hard drives

( from the official announcement ) This year's physics prize is awarded for the technology used to read data on hard disks. Due to this technology, it has been possible to miniaturize hard disks radically in recent years. For instance, sensitive read-out heads are needed to read data from the compact hard disks used in laptops and some music players. The 2007 Nobel Prize in Physics will go to Albert Fert and Peter Grunberg for their discovery of Giant Magnetoresistance .
