Today I want to recognize the entire FEL team for achieving a new world record and meeting a key deliverable for our Navy customers! This achievement culminates an incredible effort by this dedicated team and my thanks and congratulations go out to the many physicists, engineers, technicians and support staff who have made this milestone possible.
The Jefferson Lab FEL Upgrade exceeded the 10 kW average power milestone today at a wavelength of 1.61 microns. This is an important wavelength for both the optimal transmission of laser light through the atmosphere and for materials processing. A power maximum of 11.7 kW was obtained with the driver accelerator operating at 115 MeV with 7.0 mA of drive current. Under these conditions the FEL was operating at an efficiency of 1.45%, which significantly exceeds the original design specification of 1%.
I ask all of you to join me in congratulating the FEL team on this accomplishment (they will be the ones who can?t stop smiling!) and recognize their successful team effort at a celebration on Monday, October 30 from 3:30PM? 5:00PM in the CEBAF Center Atrium.
Congratulations to every member of the FEL team!
