Gowns for Hounds Presents "Fashion by the Fountain"
Joyce Miller, Physics Hall A designer, is volunteering for a new charitable organization on the Peninsula called Gowns for Hounds. The group will be selling gently used, donated gowns, party dresses and accessories to raise monies to fund veterinary care for financially challenged companion pet owners. Mini-grants for vet care will be paid directly to local veterinary practices. For example, if an elderly person on a fixed income has a dog that breaks its leg; can't afford to fix it and is faced with perhaps putting the dog down – they can apply for one of the grants to get the leg fixed.
And at the same time, the dress sale is a win-win, according to Miller, as it helps young women who may not be able to afford the full cost of going to the prom or homecoming. The group has been collecting dresses and accessories all summer and is ready to have its first "boutique." It will be Saturday, Oct. 26 at the former J. Jill's location in City Center, Newport News, from 10 a.m.- 9 p.m. They'll also have two fashion shows that day on the Market Stage – at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. They also have about a dozen wedding gowns!
The group will be taking donations the day of the sale. They will have a booth set up for "Bring Down Your Gown," and will be accepting dresses, shoes, evening purses, tiaras, etc. There will be two drop locations if you can't make it to the sale – one at Bead Retreat in Port Warwick and one at Tabb Magruder Veterinary Clinic on Hampton Highway in Yorktown.
