JSA welcomes Dr. Jane Fernandes, President of Guilford College

October has been designated ‘National Disability Employment Awareness Month’ by the Department of Labor. This year’s theme is Inclusion Drives Innovation!

JSA is excited to welcome Dr. Jane Fernandes, President of Guilford College, to deliver a colloquium on Oct. 19, 2017, at 1:30 p.m.  Dr. Fernandes is the nation’s first deaf woman to lead a College and the first female President of Guilford College.  She was also named One of The 20 Most Interesting College Presidents by The Best Schools.  Dr. Fernandes will share her unique experience regarding the personal challenges she has encountered and also offer ways to build a more inclusive work environment.

Dr. Fernandes earned her B.A. in French and Comparative Literature from Trinity College, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Iowa.  Prior to joining Guilford College, Dr. Fernandes served as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Additionally, she was a Senior Fellow at the Johnnetta B. Cole Global Diversity & Inclusion Institute at Bennett College, following her role as Provost at Gallaudet University.

While October represents an opportunity to highlight awareness around the inclusion of individuals with disabilities into the workplace, JSA is committed to a diverse & inclusive workplace year-round. In FY17, Jefferson Lab employees demonstrated significant engagement in this area through the Diversity & Inclusion survey responses, training participation, and seeking opportunities to get involved. The Diversity & Inclusion Council members have been active participants in supporting STEM outreach and are making plans for continuing the conversation with staff in 2018.

Please mark your calendar to attend Dr. Fernandes’ engaging colloquium on Oct. 19, 2017 at 1:30 in the CEBAF Center Auditorium!
