JLab E-mail Accessibility Issues on May 24

The e-mail system was slow or unresponsive for most of the day on May 24, 2007. The CNI Group made many attempts to correct the problem, but none could fully compensate for the load being placed on the servers. The extremely high load on the e-mail servers was the result of a large number of people attempting to access the servers at the same time; normally, computers randomly access e-mail servers throughout the day. The problem was further exacerbated by large email inboxes.
A new file server with increased throughput/performance had already been purchased and is scheduled to be put into production during the next maintenance day. This should address part of this problem. Additionally, we will look at automating the inspection of e-mail inboxes to notify users to decrease e-mail inbox size and eventually take action for those that grossly exceed a set limit.
If you have a large inbox, you can help prevent these problems in the future by sorting your messages into folders, thereby decreasing the size of your inbox to a reasonable level.
